Founded in 2005 and incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) by a small group of senior women from the hedge fund community, High Water Women Foundation has grown to more than 2,200 members across the financial services spectrum. High Water Women's mission is to provide constructive avenues for senior women in the financial services sector opportunities to be involved in philanthropy, volunteerism, and mentoring endeavors that improve the lives of women and children at-risk, in New York City and abroad.
As women become more successful in areas of finance, many wish to make a difference through charitable giving and philanthropic activities. We believe that we are best able to "make a difference" where philanthropy and volunteerism are coupled, and therefore we partner with organizations where our members' philanthropic and volunteerism goals can converge. We focus on philanthropies that support the social and economic empowerment of women and children in New York City and abroad. Some of the projects we are involved in include:
- Breaking new ground in global volunteer opportunities in microfinance
- Providing volunteers and partnering with organizations that provide enriched education for NYC public schools and for kids living in poverty;
financial literacy; and load review assistance to women entrepreneurs
- Annual Back to School Backpack Drive and Secret Santa program for displaced, sheltered and other at-risk families
- Sourcing board members for our charitable partners
- Raising money for partner organizations
- Holding educational meetings on relevant topics such as tax effective philanthropy and seminars on microfinance.
Our name derives, of course, from the high water mark measure that incentivizes hedge funds to outperform their last best gains. By seeking to surpass prior achievements with each new endeavor, our organization and our members produce amazing results.
Since our founding in 2005, some of High Water Women's accomplishments include the following:
- Raised over $2,000,000 for our partner organizations through events such as Casino Night 2008, 2007 & 2006 and a wine tasting event in 2005;
- Recognized as an emerging and top Foundation in a number of publications including: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Absolute Investor, Hedge World, Alpha Magazine, Private Asset Management and Smart Money;
- Nominated in 2008 for Event Planners of the Year by Institutional Investor's publication, "Private Asset Management for the 3rd Annual Casino Night" and in 2007 for Philanthropic Group and awarded in 2006 with the Visionary Award in Community Service by The National Council on Economic Education;
- Collected over 2,400 holiday gifts for distribution to children in homeless shelters through Secret Santa programs since 2004;
- Collected close to 8,900 backpacks filled with clothing and school supplies for homeless children, children of HIV mothers and other disadvantaged New York City area youths since 2005;
- Held at least 20 informational sessions for different organizations to inform our membership of their services and promote members' involvement.
