Established in 1830, Inwood House is a nationally recognized leader and innovator in teen pregnancy prevention, youth development and family support. Their continuum of service supports the growth and development of more than 8,500 impoverished New York City and New Jersey youth annually. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways through the Inwood House facility at 320 East 82nd Street, which supports 125 pregnant teens per year. The facility provides residency for a 6-month average stay, plus education, nutrition, child care, medical, insurance, career advice and emotional support. These girls (16 years old on average) need mentors for professional, cultural and scholastic development. Mentoring commitments vary in time and length, and there are opportunities that will fit all schedules. Partnership with Children Partnership with Children, founded in 1908 as Big Sisters, has served the New York City community for almost 100 years. The organization works to strengthen the emotional, social and cognitive skills of at-risk children so that they can succeed in school, in society and in their lives. Teams of professional social workers integrate themselves into school communities on a full time basis to provide comprehensive support to those children, families, teachers, and administrators that need it most. Through preventive services, counseling, and parent workshops, Partnership with Children serves over 7,000 children and youth in 10 inner-city public schools in New York City. STRIVE STRIVE New York is in the process of developing a volunteer outreach program which will provide counseling to STRIVE's students on a variety of topics related to developing their careers. STRIVE's mission is to assist adults in finding jobs and achieving financial independence, and it focuses on helping individuals in the transition from welfare to employment. Featured twice on 60 Minutes, the STRIVE model has been duplicated throughout the US and Europe and is a proven method of empowering individuals to achieve financial and emotional independence. This is an exciting time for the program and volunteers will have the opportunity to be a part of the program's incubation. Speakers for the STRIVE workshops: STRIVE students are encouraged to see the world beyond their neighborhood. We are looking for volunteers to share their life experiences and provide students, (most especially women), with an understanding of the world beyond and a belief that opportunity and success are within their reach. Time commitment will be flexible - one to five speaking commitments (about 45 minutes to an hour commitment) depending on volunteer's ability. Mentors: Volunteers are needed to work with STRIVE students during the critical job hunt period. We ask that the mentor will be available to provide support and knowledge regarding interview skills, professional social skills and career development. Time commitment: Three to six months, once or twice a month. Financial Literacy Teachers: Teachers are needed to show the importance of goal setting and the connection between goals and finances, inclusive of: math skills and their relevance to life and the business world; the relationship between work and money; growing money - explaining its purpose and why it's important to save and invest early; using the stock market to create wealth. Time commitment: Once or twice a month, depending on volunteer's ability. For further information, please contact Marina Winton or visit their website at www.strivenewyork.org. The Young Women's Leadership School (TYWLS) Founded in 1996 as one of the few all-girls' public schools in the nation, Young Women's Leadership School has quickly gained a reputation as a serious, academically challenging college-preparatory school for girls who believe they can achieve more without the distraction and competition posed by having boys in their classes. The school was ranked number one in the city in a report by InsideSchools.org entitled "Against the Odds," which recognizes schools that admit average or struggling students and graduate them on time. For further information, please contact Samantha Greenberg or visit their website at www.tywls.org. For current mentoring opportunities, please read this TYWLS Memo PDF.
